Image and Pilgrimage in Christian Culture 2

In the Chapter "Postindustrial Marian Pilgrimage," the motivation behind pilgrimages are said to happen after supernatural events. This comes in the form of "an apparition" that is experienced by multiple people at once in the same place or sometimes "a miraculous cure" (205). The connection that is made between the supernatural and pilgrimages is fascinating, but brings up another argument. If people were to rely on signs for every religious 'decision' or 'journey', and happen to misinterpret something random as a message from God, when would they know where to draw the line?
In light of this, it is interesting to see the transition in motives for pilgrimages over time.
