Landscapes of the sacred- Desert imagination
In the book, Landscapes if the Sacred on page 124 it talks about how the desert can bring you the closest to a religious/ spiritual experience. The part opens up with an ancient Arabic proverb, " the further you go into the desert, the closer you come to god." Perhaps this means that the deeper you traverse into the sandy dunes of the unknown the closer you get with god because of how close to death you are. Either way this is interrupted, the further you travel, the more your imagination thrives leading you to a spiritual experience. The constant proximity to death warrants a clearer mind and thus connecting to your self on a much deeper level.
