Putting our senses to use

December 03, 2019

A few weeks ago, we did an activity where we used our senses to choose 3 items that mean something to us. I chose a striped shell, a snake skin, and a colored stone. Most people use sight as their number one sense, but I tried to go outside of the box on this activity and use my other senses as well. I was drawn to the striped shell first because it was black and white striped with an orange center. The orange center was the main reason why I was drawn to that shell, it reminded me of a saying my mom always tells me; there is always a light at the end of the road, you just have to find it. This shell had no smell or sound to it, and I wasn't going to taste it, so I was only able to use my sight and touch senses. The next item that I was drawn to was this colored stone that was smooth on the top, but had some rough edges around it. The top of the stone had a very colorful drawing on it that made me think of the beauty of nature in our world that we live in. The last item I was drawn to was a snake skin. I personally am very afraid of snakes, but the skin just seemed so innocent laying there on the table, so it didn't scare me as much. The snake skin was the snakes way of leaving his "mark" on the world and that touched me because I am still trying to leave my own mark on this world. I really enjoyed this activity because it made me really open my eyes and think outside of the box.
