Benson and Wirzba Part 1

“In praying, we learn who we are and how we relate to God”

This is a quote that comes from the book The Phenomenology of Prayer. When I first read this I began to question how does prayer allows us to relate to God. I was curious about whether or not one can be religious and still prayer. Can prayer truly connect one to God? What steps are necessary to make prayer a successful one in order to communicate with God? Are there different levels of prayer, and can this affect how strong one’s connection with God can be? I have prayed before, but I have never truly gotten a response that I thought was the voice of God. So it amazes me that one could say that prayer allowed for a connection within one’s self and with God. I never truly understood how prayer could impact one’s life so personally, but as I continued reading this book a few things started to become clearer.
