Daniel Thompson: Blog on Rural Religion vs. Urbanized Religion
I recently read a blog on Rural Religion vs. Urbanized Religion when looking for a source to support my term paper. The author compares the religious structural, behavioral, and cultural differences between them. He starts by labeling rural religion as crude and simplistic, whereas urban religion is complex and abstract. While I think the blog exaggerates the differences a bit, its points hold true to a degree. I believe the more simple rural religion is due to the influence of nature over the people's livelihoods. This creates a direct competition against nature to survive, leading people to fall before the divine more readily. Whereas in urban religion, the threat of mother nature is far diminished. Additionally, these inhabitants aren't concerned with mere survival (getting food) as much as rural ones. This allows for more abstract and complex ideas about religion to form. My only question is whether this really represents modern day religion or if this only applies to a historical context.
