Image and Pilgrimage in Christian Culture 1

Even though pilgrims leave "profane social structures," I find it interesting that tension between religious pilgrimage groups never leaves. In the book, it mentions "different historical religions do not visit one another's shrines." It's interesting to see that even though pilgrims go on a journey to escape the toxic society, they still bring part of it with them in which they keep themselves separated from the other's religious shrine. Maybe this is done out of respect but I still question the ultimate motives of religious pilgrims. It says a pilgrimage is used to liberate one from a corrupt society and heighten the pilgrim's "attachment to his own religion" but at the same time it heightens the pilgrim's "opposition to other religions." How come something seen as good generate more hostility towards others' beliefs? Shouldn't we gain more respect for one another if we want to combat "profane social structures?"
