The Establishment of the AT

Kelly Cooke

The book ‘Tangled Roots: the Appalachian Trail and American environmental politics’ by Sarah Mittlefehldt explains the establishment of the Appalachian Trail. The man to propose the trail was Benton MacKaye, who decided that his struggling, rural Massachusetts community needed a place to maintain their physical and emotional health. He believed his idea would bring the community together as they got more involved. The town could have used the forested land for timber, since that was a common industry in the area. A lot of people stood to gain a lot of money from plowing down the forest. It didn't necessarily explain the reasoning the community had for establishing their section of the trail, but I would be curious to know why they made that choice. They had to give up monetary gain in order to preserve the wilderness that wasn't necessarily valued in the era; wilderness was often seen as a nuisance. This in itself shows the power of the AT. It also means that if that decision wasn't made, the trail might not exist at all and all of the spirituality that has been experienced on the trail would no longer exist. It's interesting to think about a society without those wilderness outlets held so dearly in the heart of through hikers and aesthetic tourists/sojourners alike.
