Noland Trail Hike

December 03, 2019

About 2 weeks ago on a Friday afternoon, I went to the Noland Trail in hopes of walking the full five miles to release some emotions. I left for the trail at about 4:00 from Christopher Newport University and made it there around 4:10. I immediately started walking the five miles because I realized that the sun would be setting soon and I wanted to get through most of the trail without having to walk in the dark. The trail is pretty narrow and is surrounded by trees and water, so once the sun goes down there is pretty much no light coming in on the trail. I got about a mile and a half done when the sun started to set, so I decided to pick up my pace to finish it faster. Once 5:00 hit, the sun had fully set and it was totally dark, and I was only two miles in, so I still had three miles to go. With everything going on in the world nowadays and in the news, being on a trail alone and in the dark, I started to get worried about my safety and started rethinking me decision of going on the trail this late in the afternoon. A few minutes later I heard what sounded like a baby crying and then saw a man in all black walking behind me. I know that I should never assume something like that, but with everything going on in the world, I got worried and decided to turn around and run back to the start of the trail just in case. I hope to eventually get over this fear because I hope to hike the AT one day in my lifetime.
