On The Trail

The book On The Trail, which I covered in my term paper, opens with a quote from Thoreau. “Some of my townsmen, it is true, can remember, and have described to me some walks which they took ten years ago, in which they were so blessed as to lose themselves for half an hour in the woods.” This quote immediately made me wonder if I had any moment like the one described by Thoreau. As someone who spent most of his summers hiking, there are a few hikes which hold a special place in my memory. There is a particular hike to a spot dubbed “Snake Hole” which I always remember losing myself on. Some of my favorite hikes were on that trail, watching animals through the trees, and silently walking through the woods. The destination itself also seemed surreal. A pool of water at the base of a sheer rock face with a bolder resting right in the middle. As a child the hike seemed magical, and could never wait to return. I feel truly lucky for being able to lose myself so many times on that trail.
